Tax Credits

  • Federal Tax Credits – Tax credits are available for up to 30% of the solar portion of the vehicle. This credit was made possible when Congress passed the Energy Policy Act in August 2005, which provided a 30% tax credit for solar energy systems. For solar-electric vehicles, eligible components include the solar panels/support frame, wiring, batteries, and charge controller. These credits were set to expire on December 31, 2008, but were recently extended to December 31, 2016 when the President signed the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008.

  • State Tax Credits - Total savings may be higher depending on additional allowances provided by some states.  Check with your state for additional tax credits.

Database of State Incentives for Renewable & Efficiency (DSIRE) is a comprehensive source of information on state, local, utility, and federal incentives and policies that promote renewable energy and energy efficiency. Established in 1995, DSIRE is an ongoing project of the NC Solar Center and the Interstate Renewable Energy Council funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.
